Naming Ceremonies...
A naming ceremony is a fantastic way to celebrate the birth of your child and to welcome them into your world. It also provides an opportunity for your friends and relatives to confirm their relationship with your child.
I like to work with parents to create their own ceremony. Many parents make vows during the naming ceremony promising to be the best parents they possibly can and take this opportunity to acknowledge the role of others in the life of their child - siblings, grandparents, other relatives and friends.
The naming can be very simple or include different rituals such as lighting candles, anointing with scented oils, bestowing of wishes or the releasing of balloons. Most importantly, it has to feel right for you and I hope that my suggestions help to generate your own ideas and together we can create a ceremony that expresses your sentiments.
I encourage parents/guardians to start by thinking about the promises they wish to make to their child and asking the Godparents to do the same.
Involving grandparents and siblings in the ceremony can also be important as they're going to be a huge part of your child's life. The ceremony should then be created so that it reflects your needs and feelings. This is a wonderful opportunity to create an occasion unique to you and your family.
Your child will receive a Naming Certificate as a memento of the day.
